Cameron's Blogs

Welcome to Cameron Poetzscher's Blog Section

Outside of his business life, Cameron is passionate about family, his home country of Australia and a wide variety of outdoor sports. As a busy executive, he hasn't got many hours to invest in his hobbies, but he makes a point of finding the time to keep active and up to date with American sports and Australian current events.

An Insider’s View of Australian Life

Cameron’s Australia blog – My Australia, provides a collection of articles and insights into his home country. Poetzscher was born and raised in Australia and it’s where he received his undergraduate degree and took on his first career role with Booz & Company. Australia is a diverse country that offers visitors a rich tapestry of culture coupled with world-class natural beauty. This is what the world knows about Australia; however, it has deeper, more complex layers to it which Poetzscher wishes to introduce to the readers of his blog. From business, to history, culture and technology, he aims to shine a light on different elements of life in Australia that will interest readers from around the world. The blog applies a microscope to the trends, policies and events that make Australia unique.

A Passion for Sports

Cameron Poetzscher comes from a nation of sports obsessed individuals. Australia has sport interwoven into its DNA and Cameron maintains a strong interest in recreational and competitive sports to this day. He is particularly passionate about running, cycling and sailing. Poetzscher expresses his interest and knowledge in these sports in his second blog - Cameron Poetzscher’s Sports Blog. As a sports fan, he writes about the issues he is most enthusiastic about, may they be exciting competitive events or visible trends in the American sports scene. Cameron's sports blog aims to provide something for everyone by applying an even focus to elite performance results in major events, such as the Rio Olympics, along with recreational and grassroots related developments across all sports.

Rio Sailing

Cameron Poetzscher Sports Blog
Ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics, sailing at the course in Guanabara Bay was a cause for concern on a number of fronts. Both politically and logistically, the Olympics presented Rio organizers and the hosting committee with a wide variety of challenges to contend with. Security across the events for athletes and spectators was of primary concern, and sailing was no different.

Cameron Poetzscher reviews the considerable hurdles that Rio's sailing organizers faced just to get the event off the ground. These included rubbish and pollution— from addressing rubbish build up through collection and management techniques, to abating fears of diseases and contamination spreading among sailors through water cleanliness measures.
The specter of security threats that affected the Rio Olympics impacted sailors too, and as Poetzscher reveals, an Australian Paralympic sailor was mugged in build-up to the event.

Australia

Picture
In this blog post Cameron Poetzscher discusses the central role sport plays in the cultural landscape of Australia, where national teams’ performances are closely monitored and judged by the public. He cites the Australian Olympic team’s relatively poor performance in Rio 2016 as a benchmark for the public’s intolerance for coming second. By taking a closer look different levels of sporting performance, Poetzscher reveals an industry where major codes are actively competing for the best talent, shifting the traditional power base and strengthening emerging sports. As Australian Rules Football continues to grow in popularity as a family sport and soccer flourishes off the back of a new national competition, traditional winter sports like rugby and rugby league are struggling to compete in terms of viewer numbers, crowd attendance, sponsorship and the acquisition of young talent.

Critical Mass movement

Cycling -Cameron Poetzscher Blog
Cameron Poetzscher writes about the impact that the Critical Mass movement has had around the world, both and in terms of raising awareness of cycling and boosting participation numbers. As a keen cyclist, Poetzscher recalls the history of Critical Mass, which was founded in 1992 in his current home town of San Francisco. Originally established as a group ride and more of a social get-together, the event soon became more structured and garnered a large following around the country, before spreading around the world. Critical Mass became more than a social gathering of like-minded cyclists: it transformed into a platform that gives cyclists a voice, builds momentum for changing cycling infrastructure on city streets and raises the profile of riders on the road. Poetzscher rounds off by considering the potential of sport in general to promote social changes and motivate people.

Olympic Sailing

Olympic Sailing
In this post Cameron Poetzscher discussed the challenges that were faced by the Olympic sailing field ahead of Rio 2016. He focused in particular on the advantage Brazilian sailors may or may not have had thanks to their better acquaintance with local conditions.

Brazil has a strong history of sailing success in the Olympics and Rio presented them with a fantastic opportunity to capitalize through expert knowledge of the local bay. Guanbara Bay, where all sailing events are held, is notoriously difficult to sail in due to shifty wind conditions, strong tides, currents and larger waves out in the Atlantic.

Poetzscher examined the chances of Martine Grael, who won the World Championships in 2014 and finished fifth in 2016, and Kahena Kunze. The two co-sailed in the 49erFX two-woman skiff class competition and indeed took the gold.

Living in Melbourne

Melbourne
Cameron Poetzscher dedicated this article to Melbourne and the aspects that make it one of the world’s leading cities to live in. By providing a brief history of the city, he shows how the global immigration patterns led to Melbourne becoming a colorful, unique and diverse cultural melting pot.

Perhaps the most defining feature of Melbourne’s identity is the sporting scene. Blessed with international sporting events such as the Australian Open tennis and Formula One Grand Prix along with domestic institutions like the Melbourne Cup and AFL grand final, Melbourne is one of the greatest sporting cities in the world.

Although it is lacking the sun-kissed beaches of some of the northern states, Poetzscher explains the finer details of what makes living in Melbourne so appealing in this short and informative article.
